Consulting Orthopedic Surgeons

Our two consulting orthopedic surgeons are experts in the field of joint assessment, replacement, arthroscopic surgery, and sports medicine. Collectively, they provide patients of Zero Gravity Physiotherapy the option of immediate orthopedic surgeon consultation, and if needed, treatment. In addition, Dr. Song and Dr. Gunton provide insight and input into our rehabilitation programs, ensuring our protocols are the most up-to-date, and as evidence based as possible. This ensures patients are receiving the most specific rehabilitation for their respective condition.

Dr. John Song

Dr. John Song obtained his Medical Degree from Queen’s University in 1993. He went on to residency at the University of Ottawa in Orthopaedic Surgery, graduating from that program in 1998. He went on to finish an additional Fellowship there in 1999 subspecializing in Shoulder Surgery. Since 1999, he has been practicing at the Welland Site, when it was still known as the Welland County General Hospital. He also serves the Dunnville and South Niagara communities. The question that always seems to come up is “Why did you choose to come to Welland?” Basically, it was through the contact between Dr. Szabo, Welland’s first Orthopaedic Surgeon, and John’s older brother, Dr. Tom Song that Dr. Szabo met and recruited John.

Among the added administrative duties in the new NHS, Dr. Song also holds a Professor Adjunct position for the McMaster Medical School taking on students and the occasional resident. His philosophy has always been to strive to remain at the forefront of advancing surgical techniques and procedures, and over the years, his successes include incorporating shoulder arthroscopy into routine procedures, bringing reverse total shoulder replacement to the region, and now by pioneering Direct Anterior Approach Hip Replacements.

Dr. Song also believes that success cannot be achieved without a strong team approach, and would like to acknowledge a few of these people who have helped shape his practice now: the late Dr. Szabo, Dr. Ansari, Dr. Rittenhouse, Dr. Gunton, Dr. Badawi, Dave Cuviello, the Nurses and Staff in the Welland Hospital who work on the 4th floor and Operating Room, and of course, Marion Little and Chris Souder for keeping his office organized. There are so many more, and he is grateful to be working with such great people dedicated to bringing excellent musculoskeletal care to the people of Niagara, and beyond.

Dr. Matthew Gunton

Dr. Matthew Gunton obtained his medical degree from Flinders University in Adelaide, South Australia in 2007. He completed Orthopaedic Surgical training at the University of Toronto in 2013 and went on to complete two fellowships. Dr. Gunton’s first fellowship was at Mt Sinai Hospital in Toronto in Adult Lower Extremity Reconstruction (hip and knee arthroplasty) and his second was at the University of Toronto in Orthopaedic Sports Medicine (arthroscopy). His main interests include knee and shoulder injuries in the amateur and elite athlete and revision knee arthroplasty.

Dr. Gunton joined the Niagara Health System at the Welland site in July of 2015 and is rapidly building a busy and dynamic practice. In addition to bringing innovative and cutting edge arthroscopic techniques to the region, he offers biologic treatments for cartilage and tendon conditions including platelet rich plasma (PRP). Dr. Gunton is pleased to be working in a team environment in Welland with his colleagues, Dr. John Song and Dr. Bryan Rittenhouse, and is helping to build strong orthopaedic care throughout the NHS. Working closely with David Cuviello and his allied health team at Zero Gravity provides Niagara patients an opportunity to access comprehensive, high quality care.

The team at Zero Gravity is passionate about providing world-class, musculoskeletal health care to the people of Niagara. Dr. Gunton proudly joins Zero Gravity as a co-manager of the clinic and is excited to contribute his expertise to ultimately optimize patient care.

After completing his orthopaedic training, Dr. Katchky undertook fellowship training at Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto, and in Melbourne and Brisbane, Australia, focused on lower extremity reconstruction (joint replacement) as well as sports orthopaedic surgery, robotic-assisted surgery, and surgical navigation. His practice is focused on hip and knee replacement, including complex and revision joint replacement, as well as knee and shoulder arthroscopy and fracture care. He is pleased to offer Direct Anterior Approach (“minimally invasive”) total hip replacement to suitable patients. He enjoys teaching medical students and residents and is proud to support the clinical teaching program at the Niagara Regional Campus of the Michael G. Degroote School of Medicine at McMaster University.

Dr. Katchky joined the orthopaedic surgery service at Niagara Health (Welland site) as well as Zero Gravity Physiotherapy in 2019 after working at the University of Vermont Medical Centre, and is proud to return to Canada to help provide orthopaedic care to the people of Welland and the Niagara Region. He is thankful for the friendship and mentorship of Dr. Song and Dr. Gunton, and for the opportunity to work with the tremendous multidisciplinary teams at the Welland Hospital and at Zero Gravity. He believes strongly in providing high quality, patient-centred, comprehensive, multi-disciplinary care to all patients.
